Google To Use Its Own Microchips In Chromebook Laptops

Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) plans to use its own central processing units, or CPUs, in its Chromebook laptops starting in 2023.

The U.S technology giant reportedly plans to use its own CPUs in Chromebooks and tablets that run on the company’s Chrome operating system beginning in 2023 once its contracts with existing suppliers expire.

CPUs are microchips that are often referred to as the brains of a computer as they perform all of a machine’s main tasks. Google currently uses CPUs made by external suppliers such as Intel and AMD to power its Chromebooks.

Google’s new chips are reportedly based on blueprints from Arm, the SoftBank-owned British chip designer whose microchip architecture powers 90% of the world’s smartphones.

In August, Google announced that it will build its own smartphone processor called "Google Tensor." The microchip will power Google’s new Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro devices that go on sale this autumn.
