Meta Introduces Paid Verification For Instagram And Facebook

Meta Platforms (META) is introducing a new paid verification subscription service for its Instagram and Facebook social media sites.

Called “Meta Verified,” the new service will cost $11.99 U.S. a month on the web and $14.99 U.S. per month on iOS devices.

Users of Instagram and Facebook will be able to submit government issued identification and get a blue verification badge attesting to the legitimacy of their accounts.

Meta has previously granted official verification to notable users such as politicians, executives, and members of the press to signal their authenticity.

The company’s new subscription service is similar to Twitter’s service called “Twitter Blue,” which grants users a verification badge if they pay a monthly fee.

Meta said that, in order to qualify, users must be at least 18 years old, meet minimum account activity requirements, and submit a government ID that matches their profile name and photo.

Subscriptions will also include monitoring for account impersonation, according to the company.

Businesses are not currently eligible to apply for Meta Verified, and Meta said that users will not be able to change their profile name, username, date of birth, or profile photo without again going through an application process.

Meta Platforms’ stock is down 14% from a year ago at $172.88 U.S. per share.
