General Motors To Install 40,000 EV Chargers Across The U.S. And Canada

General Motors (NYSE:GM) says it will leverage its extensive dealership network to deploy 40,000 electric vehicle charging stations across the U.S. and Canada.

Starting next year (2022), General Motors will give each of its dealers up to 10 Ultium-branded chargers to install in their communities. The chargers will be available for use by all electric vehicle drivers, not just those who buy a GM model.

The effort will help deploy public charging stations in rural areas and underserved urban neighborhoods, the automaker said in a news release.

The announcement is part of General Motor’s plan to invest $750 million U.S. into expanding public charging options as electric vehicle sales takeoff. Industry data shows that there are currently about 113,000 public charging stations in North America, and about 1.5 million battery electric vehicles have been registered in the U.S. and Canada since the start of 2011.

General Motors has also announced alliances with independent charging network companies such as Blink Charging and ChargePoint Holdings as part of the effort to deploy public chargers.
