Stocks to Start Thursday Lower

Stantec, CCL in Focus

Futures tracking Canada's main stock index dipped on Thursday as oil prices declined with U.S.-Iran nuclear talks underway in Geneva, while investors also assessed earnings from Nvidia.

The TSX added 156.95 points to conclude Wednesday at 34,127.33.

March futures retreated 0.3% Thursday.

Among after-the-bell results on Wednesday, specialty label maker CCL Industries' fourth-quarter revenue missed estimates.

Design and consulting firm Stantec reported quarterly profit above estimates.

On the economic front, Statistics Canada said the number of employees receiving pay and benefits from their employer—measured as "payroll employment" in the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours—decreased by 35,400 (-0.2%) in December, following little change in November. On a year-over-year basis, payroll employment was down 28,300 (-0.2%) in December.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange gained 21.62 points, or 2%, to 1,084.97.

ON WALLSTREET

Stock futures were relatively unchanged on Thursday as investors digested earnings results from Nvidia and Salesforce.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials advanced 32 points to 49,566.

Futures for the S&P 500 poked 3.75 points to 6,963.50.

Futures for the NASDAQ edged up three points to 25,383.50.

Software and tech names bounced back in the regular session, with Oracle gaining 1.2% and each of the “Magnificent Seven” tech giants closing in the green. Microsoft, a notable laggard this year, gained about 3% on the day.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 climbed 0.3% to reach another all-time peak, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng dipped 1.4%.

Oil prices subtracted $1.30 to $64.12 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices sank $30.30 to $5,195.90 U.S an ounce.
