Futures Pop with Gold Prices

Agnico, Iamgold Dominate

Futures for Canada's main stock index rose on Wednesday, as gold and oil prices recovered from losses in the previous session, while investors awaited the minutes of the U.S. Federal Reserve's meeting in January.

The TSX lost 177.16 points to end Tuesday at 32,896.55.

March futures ballooned 0.5% Wednesday.

In after-market earnings on Tuesday, iA Financial reported fourth-quarter profit below estimates and IAMGOLD reported quarterly revenue above estimates.

Agnico Eagle announced additional investment in Maple Gold Mines.

On the economic slate, the Canadian Real Estate Association reports the number of home sales recorded over Canadian MLS® Systems fell 5.8% on a month-over-month basis in January 2026.

The TSX Venture Exchange backpedaled 25.24 points, or 2.5%, Tuesday to 966.75.

ON WALLSTREET

Stock futures were higher on Wednesday, led by tech, as traders awaited the release of the minutes from the Federal Reserve’s most recent policy meeting.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials zoomed 152 points, or 0.3%, to 49,764.

Futures for the much broader index grabbed 32.5 points, or 0.5% to 6,893.

Futures for the NASDAQ sprang up 159 points, or 0.6%, to 24,926.75.

Amazon shares rose more than 1.6% after regulatory filings showed Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square grew its stake in the e-commerce giant by 65% during the fourth quarter. That makes Amazon the fund’s third-largest holding. The move comes after the stock snapped a nine-day losing streak. Micron also gained more than 1% after David Tepper’s Appaloosa Management increased its holdings in the chipmaker.

Nvidia shares ticked 2.2% higher in the premarket as well.

Wall Street is coming off a muted session, with the major averages eking out small gains. The software sector, which has already been under pressure due to fears of disruption by artificial intelligence, fell during the session.

Traders are also watching for the minutes from the Fed’s January meeting. The next big catalyst this week, however, will likely be the personal consumption expenditure price index reading that’s due on Friday.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 retreated 0.4%, while most of Asia was off for the Lunar Year holiday.

Oil prices gained $1.84 to $64.17 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices hiked $39.80 to $4,945.70 U.S an ounce.
