TSX Composite starts higher today; manufacturing sales beat the expectations

Investing.com - Canadian equities started mixed on Monday. The top gainers were Capped Real Estate, Capped REIT and Renewable Energy and Clean Technology indices.

At the market open in Toronto, the TSX Composite Index climbed 0.22%. The TSX Venture and the TSX Smallcap have declined. The TSX Venture fell 0.39%, while the Smallcap was down by 0.35%.

Top Gainers:

  • CI Financial Corp (TSX:CIX): Climbed 30.15% or 7.24 points to 31.25.
  • Linamar (TSX:LNR): Rose 3.27% or 2.02 points to 63.87.
  • BRP Inc (TSX:DOO): Increased 2.80% or 1.90 points to 69.70.

Top Losers:

  • IAMGold (TSX:IMG): Dropped 6.01% or 0.48 points to 7.51.
  • Seabridge Gold (TSX:SEA): Declined 4.75% or 1.00 points to 20.07.
  • New Gold (TSX:NGD): Fell 4.53% or 0.180 points to 3.790.

In Commodities Trading:

  • January Brent Oil Contract dropped by 1.57% or 1.17 points to 73.46 a barrel.
  • Crude Oil for January delivery fell 1.24 points to 70.00 a barrel.
  • Gold Futures for December delivery declined 75.10 points to 2,662.10 a troy ounce.

Currency Markets:

  • USD/CAD is trading at 1.3973.
  • EUR/CAD is stable at 1.4687.
  • The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.76% at 106.687.

Main Economic Events:

Today's main economic event for the Canadian markets is the Manufacturing Sales data. Manufacturing sales improved better than expected in the month of October.

This Friday, we are going to focus on GDP numbers.
