TSX Composite starts higher today; building permits in focus

Investing.com - Canadian equities started mixed on Tuesday. The top gainers were Capped Information Technology, Capped Consumer Staples and Capped Industrials indices; while Capped Materials, Capped Communication Services and Capped Consumer Discretionary indices were the top losers.

At the market open in Toronto, the TSX Composite Index climbed 0.78%. The TSX Venture and the TSX Smallcap were mixed. The TSX Venture falls 0.32%, while the Smallcap was steady.

Top Gainers:

  • Shopify Inc (NYSE:SHOP): Increased 21.86% or 27.40 points to 152.77.
  • Energy Fuels Inc (TSX:EFR): Climbed 4.12% or 0.370 points to 9.350.
  • Interfor Corp (TSX:IFP): Rose 2.62% or 0.51 points to 19.97.

Top Losers:

  • Algoma Steel (TSX:ASTL): Dropped 3.31% or 0.54 points to 15.79.
  • Atkinsrealis Group Inc (TSX:ATRL): Fell 2.32% or 1.59 points to 66.91.
  • HudBay Minerals (TSX:HBM): Declined 2.35% or 0.28 points to 11.85.

In Commodities Trading:

  • January Brent Oil Contract climbed by 0.96% or 0.69 points to 72.52 a barrel.
  • Crude Oil for December delivery rose 0.74 points to 68.78 a barrel.
  • Gold Futures for December delivery increased 1.10 points to 2,618.80 a troy ounce.

Currency Markets:

  • USD/CAD is over the 1.39 line again.
  • EUR/CAD is trying to hold above 1.48.
  • The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.33% at 105.807.
