TSX Composite higher today; shares up at market open

Investing.com - Canadian equities started mixed on Thursday. The top risers are Capped Materials, Renewable Energy and Clean Technology and Capped Consumer Staples indices.

S&P/TSX Capped Materials Index

At the market open in Toronto, the TSX Composite Index rose 0.31%. The TSX Venture and the TSX Smallcap also climbed. The TSX Venture increased 1.06%, while the Smallcap was up by 1.30%.

Top Gainers:

  • B2Gold (NYSE:BTG): Rose 9.14% or 0.34 points to 4.06.
  • OceanaGold (TSX:OGC): Climbed 6.18% or 0.215 points to 3.695.
  • Equinox Gold (TSX:EQX): Increased 5.47% or 0.42 points to 8.10.

Top Losers:

  • Ballard (TSX:BLDP): Dropped 3.57% or 0.09 points to 2.29.
  • Gfl Environmental (TSX:GFL): Fell 2.69% or 1.49 points to 53.82.
  • Shopify (TSX:SHOP): Declined 1.73% or 1.68 points to 95.39.

In Commodities Trading:

  • November Brent Oil Contract climbed by 0.65% or 0.46 points to 71.07 a barrel.
  • Crude Oil for October delivery rose 0.61 points to 67.92 a barrel.
  • Gold Futures for December delivery increased 34.90 points to 2,577.30 a troy ounce.

Currency Markets:

  • USD/CAD is challenging its way to 1.36.
  • EUR/CAD has seen the 1.50 territory again after having dropped to 1.49 yesterday.
  • The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.08% at 101.572.

Main Economic Events:

Today's main economic event for the Canadian markets is the monthly building permits, which jumped to 22.1% against the forecast of 6.5%.
