TSX Composite in red today; shares mixed at market open

Investing.com - Canadian equities started mixed on Thursday, with rises in Health Care, Real Estate and Utilities; and losses in Financial, Energy and Consumer Discretionary indices.

At the market open in Toronto, the TSX Composite Index fell 0.29%. The TSX Venture and the TSX Smallcap also declined. The TSX Venture dropped 0.29%, while the Smallcap fell by 0.42%.

Top Gainers:

Algoma Steel (TSX:ASTL): Rose 8.14% or 0.99 points to 13.15

NFI Group (TSX:NFI): Climbed 8.16% or 1.40 points to 18.55

Alamos Gold (TSX:AGI): Increased 6.08% or 1.43 points to 24.96

Top Losers:

First Majestic Silver (TSX:AG): Dropped 12.18% or 1.04 points to 7.50

SSR Mining (NASDAQ:SSRM): Declined 7.44% or 0.57 points to 7.09

Parex Resources (TSX:PXT): Fell 6.57% or 1.36 points to 19.35

In Commodities Trading:

Crude Oil for September delivery climbed 0.40 points to 78.31 a barrel.

October Brent Oil Contract rose by 0.51% or 0.41 points to 80.21 a barrel.

Gold Futures for December delivery rose 22.15 points to 2,495.15 a troy ounce.

Currency Markets:

USD/CAD is just over 1.38.

EUR/CAD is trying to stay over 1.49.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.15% at 104.012.

Main Economic Events:

Today's main economic event for the Canadian markets is the Manufacturing PMI.
