In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index dipped 344.71 points, or 1.4%, to 23,785.79.

In Shanghai, markets returned to trading Thursday after the Golden Week holidays, shedding 47.34 points, or 1.1%, to 4,310.28.
In Korea, the Kospi declined 177.97 points, or 2.6%, to 6,625.93.
In Taiwan, the Taiex let go of 492.93 points, or 1%, to 49,313.44.
In Singapore, the Straits Times index faltered 195.48 points, or 3.5%, to 5,412.96.
In New Zealand, the NZX 50 inched upward 7.81 points, or 0.1% to 13,691.85.
In Australia, the ASX 200 gave back 66.77 points, or 0.8%, to 8,660.91.
