Nikkei Arrests Negative Trend, Gains

Stocks in the Asia-Pacific region were mixed Thursday, as July drew to a close, as markets in Japan and Hong Kong staged comebacks.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 reversed its negative tide and gained 433.24 points, or 0.7%, Thursday to 61,867.43

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng gained 50.96 points, or 0.2%, to 25,858.88.

In Korea, shares of Samsung Electronics ended Thursday’s trade at 0.72% lower, reversing earlier gains even as the company’s second-quarter operating profit beat estimates on soaring AI demand.

In other markets;

In Shanghai, the CSI index lost 50.54 points, or 1.1%, to 4,549.72.

In Singapore, the Straits Times 50 index lost 20.34 points, or 0.4%, to 5,539.38

In Korea, the Kospi index fell 39.61, or 0.7%, to 5,593.56

In Taiwan, the Taiex index dished off 105.88 points, or 0.3%, to 39,933.30

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 shed 213.89 points, or 1.5%, to 13,762.78.

In Australia, the ASX dipped 70.91 points, or 0.8%, to 8,967.71
