China, Hong Kong Falter, Japan Moves Ahead


Chinese stocks sold off in a volatile day of trading amid mixed Asia-Pacific markets Wednesday.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index gained 340.42 points, or 0.9%, to 39,277.96.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index lost another 289.55 points, or 1.4%, to 20,637.24. On Tuesday, the HSI recorded its worst day in 16 years, closing 9.4% lower.

Investors are focused on policy decisions from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

New Zealand’s central bank slashed its policy rate by 50 basis points to 4.75%, while the RBI held rates at 6.5%.

CHINA

Markets in Shanghai dropped 300.12 points, or 7.1%, to 3,955.98, snapping a 10-day winning streak.

In other markets

Markets in Korea were closed for holiday.

In Taiwan, the Taiex index recovered 47.69 points, or 0.2%, to 22,659.08

In Singapore, the Straits Times Index restocked 19.97 points, or 0.6%, to 3,595.66.

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 sprang back to life 220.15 points, or 1.8%, to 12,776.14.

In Australia, the ASX 200 gained 10.43 points, or 0.1%, to 8,187.38.
