Asia Mixed as Tech Shares Watched

Stocks in Asia-Pacific were mixed on Wednesday, with tech shares in the region monitored following overnight declines for the sector on Wall Street.

The Nikkei 225 in Tokyo leaped 444.01 points, or 1.8%, to 25,349.60.

Shares of conglomerate Softbank Group slipped 2.5%.

The Japanese yen traded at 105.45 per U.S. dollar, still off levels below 104.3 against the greenback seen earlier in the week.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index dropped 74.5 points, or 0.3%, to 26,226.98.

Tech shares in the region were watched after their counterparts on Wall Street saw declines overnight. Hong Kong-listed shares of Chinese tech firms were among the hardest hit on Wednesday.

Hong Kong-listed shares of Chinese tech giants Alibaba faded 9.8% and Tencent dropped 7.4%. JD.com also fell 9.2% while Meituan declined 9.7%.

Quarantine-free leisure travel between Hong Kong and Singapore will start on Nov. 22, according to details of a bilateral air travel bubble announced Wednesday.

Shares of major airlines that may benefit from the move were mixed. Cathay Pacific in Hong Kong rose 1.4% on the day. Singapore Airlines’s stock in Singapore nudged 0.26% lower. Shares in both airlines had surged around 14% each on Tuesday.

In South Korea, industry heavyweight Samsung Electronics saw its stock gain 1.8%.

The Australian dollar changed hands at $0.7288, higher than levels below $0.72 seen last week.

CHINA

In Shanghai, the CSI 300 lost 48.98 points, or 1%, to 4,904.20.

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation on Tuesday announced a set of draft guidelines aimed at curbing monopolistic behaviour on internet platforms

In other markets

In Korea, the Kospi index battled 33.04 points, or 1.4%, to 2,713.28.

In Taiwan, the Taiex Index vaulted 180.47 points, or 1.4%, to 13,262.19.

In Singapore, the Straits Times Index moved higher 95.64 points, or 3.7%, to 2,452.83

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 forged ahead 53.24 points, or 0.4%, to 12,665.63

In Australia, the ASX 200 gained 109.15 points, or 1.7%, to 6,449.68.
