Canada’s Manufacturing Sales Fell 1.7% In June

Canada’s manufacturing sales declined 1.7% to $71.5 billion in June due mostly to a fall in sales of petroleum and coal products.

According to Statistics Canada, sales were down in 14 of 21 subsectors in June. Petroleum and coal products led the way with a monthly decline of 8.3%.

Chemical industry sales dropped 6.5% in June, driven by a decline in sales of pesticides, fertilizers, and other agricultural chemicals. Machinery sales fell 5.5% during the month.

Conversely, sales of motor vehicles rose 11.4% in June to their highest level since 2019 as many auto manufacturing plants increased their production.

Sales of motor vehicle parts decreased 6.8% in June following an increase in May.

Statistics Canada said total sales in constant dollar terms dropped 1% in June, indicating a lower volume of goods sold throughout the country.
