An ongoing supply shortage pushed Canadian automotive sales down 4.5% in September from
a year earlier, according to the latest data from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.
The Toronto-based firm said that 130,421 light vehicles were sold in Canada during September,
down from 136,584 in the year earlier period.
September marked the lowest monthly sales level for vehicles in Canada since the 2009
recession, according to DesRosiers.
The consulting firm said sales levels among automakers have varied widely based on supply
chain disruptions, notably the availability of semiconductors.
Sales for the big three automakers in Detroit, Michigan saw a big rebound in this year’s third
quarter, including a 27.6% year-over-year gain for General Motors (GM).
Looking at the year-to-date numbers, DesRosiers said General Motors sales are down 3.3%
compared with last year, while Ford’s (F) sales are up 1.5% and Toyota’s (TM) sales are down
22.7%.
