Canadian Automotive Sales Fell 6% In May As Demand Weakened

Canadian automotive sales fell 6% in May compared to April and were 23.9% below their pre-pandemic levels, according to the latest data from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.

Canadian light vehicle sales totaled 153,761 in May, up 35.8% from 113,224 in May 2020 when vehicle sales plunged due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, sales in May were down 6% from 162,455 in April and were 23.9% below May 2019 levels before the global pandemic.

DesRosiers noted that the seasonally adjusted annual rate of sales in May, which is traditionally the strongest month for sales in Canada, slipped to 1.48 million vehicles.

The firm says the Canadian automotive market continues to struggle with lower demand and disruptions in the supply of semiconductor microchips that are used in vehicles.
