Family films have reigned supreme at the summer box office so far in 2024. That remained the case in the opening weekend of July. Despicable Me 4, the next instalment in the hugely profitable franchise that has also spawned the Minions offshoot, raked in $75 million at the North American box office over the July 5-7 weekend. After releasing on July 3, the family film has expanded its domestic take to roughly $122 million and generated another $106 million at the international box office, taking in nearly $230 million worldwide.
While an impressive opening, this instalment in the Despicable Me franchise found itself suitably in fourth place behind the massive openings for Minions and Minions: The Rise of Gru and Despicable Me 2 which generated $83.5 million for its 2013 opening. Each film in the series has achieved a domestic gross over $250 million.
Not to be outdone, Inside Out 2 continued its impressive run and generated $30 million at the domestic box office over the first weekend of July. That brought its estimated total gross to $533 million and its worldwide gross to $1.21 billion.
Rounding out the top five was A Quiet Place: Day One, which raked in $21 million in its second box office weekend. Meanwhile, MaXXXine posted a $6.70 million gross in its debut weekend while Bad Boys: Ride or Die delivered $6.55 million – down 36% from the previous week.
