Canada’s Competition Intensity Has Weakened In Last 20 Years: Report

A new report by the federal Competition Bureau has found that competition intensity in Canada has weakened considerably over the last two decades.

The Competition Bureau’s study looked at competition across all sectors of the economy over the past 20 years and concludes that business competition in Canada has decreased by a striking amount since 2000.

The federal agency is calling on all levels of government to course correct and help stimulate greater competition in Canada’s private sector.

The current federal government has introduced new legislation that would amend Canada’s Competition Act to address what some economists have called weaknesses in Canadian law as it applies to the private sector.

However, the legislation is still working its way through Parliament and no timelines for changes to the law have been announced.

The Competition Bureau offered an early look at its forthcoming report on competition in Canada. The full report is expected to be released by the end of October.
