Popular summer films “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” continue to hold up well at the global box office, posting historic results for their second weekends of release.
Barbie added $93 million U.S. in ticket sales between Friday and Sunday, posting a decline of only 43% from its debut weekend.
Among the movies that enjoyed bigger second weekend tallies were “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at $149 million U.S., and “Avengers: Endgame,” which took in $147 million U.S.
“Oppenheimer,” about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who led the development of the atomic bomb during World War II, also had a strong second weekend, taking in an additional $46.6 million U.S.
Oppenheimer is now the first R-rated film to gross more than $10 million U.S. for seven consecutive days.
After two weeks of release, “Barbie” has earned $775 million U.S. worldwide, while “Oppenheimer” has grossed $400 million U.S. globally.
Disney’s remake of the film the “Haunted Mansion” debuted in third place over the weekend, taking in a disappointing $33 million U.S. at the international box office.
The latest “Mission: Impossible” movie starring Tom Cruise took the number five spot at the weekend box office, earning an additional $10.7 million U.S. and bringing its global total to $448 million U.S.
