The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are investigating the theft of more than $100 million U.S. worth of gold from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.
Gold that is mined in Canada is often shipped through Pearson airport on its way to destinations around the world.
The RCMP, Canada’s national police force, have confirmed that they were contacted by Peel Regional Police who are responsible for the jurisdiction that includes Pearson airport, and asked to help investigate a possible gold heist.
Toronto media are reporting that 3,600 pounds of gold being shipped through the airport has been stolen.
At current prices, 3,600 pounds of gold would be worth about $115 million U.S.
The price of gold has been steadily rising this year amid growing fears of an economic recession and is currently hovering right around $2,000 U.S. per ounce.
