Electric vehicle maker Tesla (TSLA) says it has ended sales of solar roofs after about a decade of offering the product to consumers.
Tesla had sold solar roof tiles, marketing them as a more attractive and affordable alternative to traditional solar panels.
However, Tesla has discontinued the sale of its solar roof tiles without making an official announcement about it.
The solar roof page on Tesla’s website now redirects people to a solar panel offering from the company.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk launched the solar roof tiles to great fanfare in 2016 after the company bought SolarCity, a solar installer.
In 2021, Tesla said that it was aiming for 1,000 solar roof installations per week, but industry estimates said the actual number of installations was much less.
Tesla's solar strategy has now pivoted to traditional panels that it manufactures at a facility in Buffalo, New York.
Musk has long been a fan of solar power and does not appear to have given up on the technology.
Earlier this year, Tesla filed plans in Texas for a $10.1 billion U.S. solar cell ?factory outside Houston that would create nearly 10,000 jobs.
The installation of solar panels has waned across the U.S. amid regulatory uncertainty and as governments cancel rebates and financial incentives related to the technology.
TSLA stock has declined 20% this year to trade at $350.25 U.S. per share.
