Meta Platforms Boosts Investment In Texas Data Centre To $10 Billion

Meta Platforms (META) is boosting its investment in a Texas artificial intelligence (A.I.) data centre by more than sixfold to $10 billion U.S.

Meta says it aims to reach one gigawatt of capacity by the time the data centre is operational in 2028.

The data centre, located in El Paso, Texas, will lead to the creation of 300 new jobs, with more than 4,000 construction workers required at its peak.

Meta said that it plans to add more than 5,000 megawatts of clean power to the electrical grid as part of the data centre.

When Meta began construction at the 1.2-million-square-foot data centre last fall, its planned investment was $1.5 billion U.S.

Meta is dramatically increasing its investment in the El Paso site as it responds to rising demand for computing resources and A.I. workloads.

In its most recent financial results, Meta said its capital expenditures for 2026 would reach $135 billion U.S.

The hefty spending is garnering scrutiny from Wall Street, with META stock down 17% on the year.

The shares fell 8% on March 26 after the company suffered two high-profile court defeats related to the company’s failure to police its social media sites and protect children.

Meta has been cutting costs elsewhere as it prioritizes A.I., recently announcing hundreds of job cuts. The company currently has a total of 30 data centres, 26 of which are in the U.S.

META stock is trading at $547.75 U.S. per share.
