Nvidia To Curb A.I. Model Use As Concerns Grow

Chipmaker Nvidia (NVDA) says it is likely to restrict or stop using artificial intelligence (A.I.) models unless startups Anthropic and OpenAI guarantee that ‌their intellectual property will not be misused.

The comments from Nvidia come as industry concerns over A.I.’s potential harms grows, and amid a public backlash against the proliferation of data centres.

Large technology companies, including Palantir Technologies (PLTR), supported Nvidia’s approach and called for Anthropic and OpenAI to do more to safeguard A.I.

Microsoft (MSFT) has proposed using isolated cloud environments to help restrict A.I. and ensure any harms are limited.

The responses from technology companies comes after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for A.I. companies to slow the ‌pace of development, warning humans could lose control of the technology.

Nvidia already limits Anthropic's use to less sensitive tasks ‌and relies on its own internal A.I.models for most of its work.

There is growing pressure on technology companies to reign in and safeguard A.I. technologies following several breaches in recent weeks and warnings of potential harms to humanity.

A former Anthropic researcher recently said that there is a greater than 10% chance that A.I. kills all humans within a decade.

NVDA stock has risen 19% over the last 12 months to trade at $210.96 U.S. per share.
