Several technology companies, including Nvidia (NVDA) and Microsoft (MSFT), are banding together to launch an artificial intelligence (A.I.) safety initiative following a cyberattack on OpenAI.
The safety initiative, which also includes SpaceX (SPCX) and Palantir (PLTR), is focused on open models as the industry fallout continues after a cyberattack committed by a rogue OpenAI model.
Concerns are rising after it was revealed that a startup called Hugging Face was unable to use leading U.S. frontier models to defend itself from a cyberattack, spreading to OpenAI.
The technology companies say they are launching a new initiative aimed at building and sharing open A.I. tools and helping one another strengthen their defence capabilities.
“The Open Secure AI Alliance will work to remediate and disclose vulnerabilities using open technologies,” said Nvidia in a written statement.
There are growing calls to limit access to A.I. models built by Chinese companies, which have been accused of campaigns to extract information from U.S. rivals’ systems.
Last week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent threatened sanctions on Chinese companies that commit cyberattacks against American firms.
Currently, the majority of open source A.I. models are built and released by Chinese companies.
NVDA stock has risen 17% in the last 12 months to trade at $206.84 U.S. per share.
