New Disney Film ‘The Marvels’ Has Weak Opening

New Disney (DIS) film “The Marvels” has posted the lowest opening weekend box office ever for a movie based on Marvel comic book characters.

The latest entrant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) earned an estimated $47 million U.S. domestically over its debut weekend, the lowest among more than 30 Marvel movies made to date.

Box office analysts had expected the film’s opening to be as much as $80 million U.S. domestically. Internationally, “The Marvels” earned $63.3 million U.S. in ticket sales, bringing its worldwide total to $110.3 million U.S.

Disney has struggled with its Marvel comics-based films since the movie “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019 wrapped up the storylines of popular characters such as Captain America and Iron Man.

Disney chief executive officer (CEO) Bob Iger has said that he plans to review the company’s upcoming slate of Marvel comic book content with a view to scaling it back.

Walt Disney Co.’s stock is flat this year (down 0.79%) at $88.27 U.S. per share.
