New Spider-Man Film Opens To $120 Million As Summer Box Office Heats Up

New film “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” opened to $120.5 million U.S. at the North American box office as the summer movie season begins to heat up.

The movie, produced by Sony (SONY), racked up the second largest opening weekend of 2023, just behind Universal’s (UVV) “Super Mario Bros. Movie” that was released in the spring.

The film also marks the third best opening weekend for any Spider-Man film, animated or live-action.

The latest Spider-Man film arrives after several other strong box office performers in recent weeks, including Disney’s (DIS) “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3” and the live action version of “The Little Mermaid.”

In its fifth week of release, “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3” has earned a total of $322.7 million U.S. at the North American box office. The film has grossed $780 million U.S. worldwide.

“The Little Mermaid” has earned $186.2 million U.S. in domestic ticket sales and $326.7 million U.S. globally.

Additionally, Universal’s “Fast X” film earned $9.24 million U.S. in ticket sales over the weekend, bringing its North American total to $128.4 million U.S.

Year-to-date, the North American box office has earned a total of $3.6 billion U.S., which is 21.9% behind pre-pandemic levels, according to data from box office tracker Comscore.

The domestic box office this year is 27.9% above the same period in 2022.
