Ottawa Provides Grocery Rebate To Low-Income Canadians

The federal government in Ottawa has passed legislation in Parliament that will provide a one-time grocery rebate to eligible low-income Canadians who have been struggling with the rising cost of living.

The Department of Finance said that the grocery rebate will be paid to about 11 million low-income households on July 5 of this year following confirmation in Parliament.

The government has said that the grocery rebate is meant to provide inflation relief to people and families who have been struggling to make ends meet as consumer prices have risen sharply across the country.

Eligible families of four will receive up to $467 by direct deposit or cheque from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), while single people without children will get up to $234 and seniors will receive a rebate of $225.

The grocery rebate effectively extends the boost to the GST rebate that the federal government provided last year to help Canadians who are struggling with inflation.

Canada’s annualized inflation rate currently sits at 4.3%, down from a 40-year high of 8.1% reached in June 2022.

The Bank of Canada aims to keep inflation at an annualized rate of 2%.
