Cape Breton Gypsum Mine To Reopen

A gypsum mine in Cape Breton that closed seven years ago is being resurrected.

The Canadian division of United States Gypsum Corporation, also known as USG Corp., is planning to spend $104 million to reopen the mine site located in Little Narrows, Nova Scotia.

Chicago-based USG Corp. said the Cape Breton mine will produce up to two million tonnes of gypsum per year and create about 100 full-time, permanent jobs.

The relaunch is expected to take three years to complete, said the company.

Gypsum is a key component in drywall, a building material that’s widely used to form walls and ceilings in houses and other buildings.

The gypsum from Little Narrows will be shipped by boat to Montreal and other locations along the eastern seaboard, said USG.

The mine in Little Narrows first produced gypsum in 1935. USG previously ran the site between 1954 and 2016, before shutting it down.

United States Gypsum Corporation is a privately held company and its stock is not traded on a public exchange.
