Futures Climb Ahead of Powell Speech

Futures tied to Canada's main stock index rose on Thursday, helped by crude prices, ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech and U.S. economic data later in the day.

The TSX climbed 66.01 points to conclude Wednesday at 24,989.02, a new all-time high.

December futures gathered 0.2% Thursday.

The Canadian dollar slumped 0.11 cents to 71.35 cents U.S.

Powell's speech will take center stage as the top policymaker could offer possible remarks on the pace of future U.S. policy reduction.

In corporate news, distributor of architectural building products Adentra surpassed third-quarter sales estimates and increased its quarterly dividend to $0.15 per share from $0.14.

In matters economic, new motor vehicle sales for September are in the forecast for Thursday (about 9:30 a.m. EST)

The TSX Venture Exchange leaned lower 3.98 points Wednesday to 593.72.

ON WALLSTREET

U.S. stock futures rose slightly Thursday, as investors tried to recapture the postelection momentum that brought the major averages to record highs.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gained 105 points, or 0.2%, to 44,212.

Futures for the S&P 500 forged ahead 5.75 points, or 0.1%, to 6,021.75.

Futures for the NASDAQ Composite Index moved up 5.25 points to 21,165.25.

Disney shares popped 8% after the media giant reported better-than-expected fiscal fourth-quarter results. The company got a boost from strong streaming growth driving its entertainment business.

On the economic front, the October producer price index will be released Thursday, and the retail sales report is due out Friday. Fed Chair Jerome Powell is set to speak Thursday in Dallas, Texas.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 fell 0.5% Thursday, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng ditched 2%.

Oil prices surged 57 cents to $69.00 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices flopped $28.30 to $2,558.20 U.S. an ounce.
