Earnings Static in May

Figures released Thursday morning showed that Canadians' weekly earnings pretty much stayed put in May, the last month for which numbers were available.

Statistics Canada put the figure at $956.00 month before last, forging up only 0.2% from April, and up only 0.9% from May 2015.

The agency goes on to say non-farm payroll employees worked an average of 32.8 hours per week in May, little changed from April and down from an average of 33.0 hours in May 2015.

StatsCan also reports that in the 12 months to May, average weekly earnings increased in five of the 10 largest industrial sectors, led by administrative and support services, wholesale and retail trade. Over the same period, earnings declined in professional, scientific and technical services, accommodation and food services, as well as health-care and social assistance.
