‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ Dominates the Box Office in Opening Weekend

The summer movie season is nearly upon as after passing through the second last weekend of the spring 2024. That weekend stretched over Friday, June 7th to Sunday, June 9th. AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) is the largest movie theater operator in North America. Its stock has received significant attention as part of the “meme stock” crazy that was reignited after the return of the celebrity trader that sparked the run in 2021. However, shares of AMC failed to gain significant momentum. The stock is still down 22.9% in the year-to-date period as of close on Monday, June 10, 2024.

Will Smith has established himself as one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood over his television and film career that has spanned back to the early 1990s. Bad Boys: Ride or Die debuted to a North American and worldwide audience on Friday, June 7th 2024. This is the fourth film in the Bad Boys series. The first instalment, Bad Boys, generated $65.8 million at the domestic box office and $141 million worldwide. Meanwhile, the second and third instalments brought in $138 million and $206 million, respectively, in North America.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the franchise’s fourth film, raked in $56.5 million at the domestic box office over the June 7-9 weekend. The third film in the franchise, Bad Boys for Life, generated $62.5 million in its opening domestic weekend. That film ended up as the highest grossing in the franchise at $206 million in North America and $426 million worldwide.

The Garfield Movie, IF, The Watchers, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes rounded out the top five at the domestic box office, raking in $10.0 million for the second place film and $5.41 million for the fifth placed film.
