Apple (AAPL) has unveiled a new low-cost iPhone and a faster iPad Air as it targets price-conscious consumers.
The main device is Apple’s new iPhone 17e, a budget smartphone whose price starts at $599 U.S., which is $200 U.S. cheaper than the $799 U.S. cost of a standard iPhone 17 model.
The cheaper iPhone 17e is aimed at helping Apple better compete in the mid-tier smartphone market against lower-priced devices from Samsung (SSNLF) and Alphabet (GOOGL).
The iPhone 17e keeps the same 6.1-inch size of a standard device, adds more durable glass, Apple’s A19 microchip, and 256 gigabits of storage.
The more affordable iPhone is also compatible with Apple Intelligence, the company’s artificial intelligence (A.I.) technology.
The iPhone 17e comes in pink, black, and white colours, with preorders starting on March 4 and in-store availability beginning on March 11.
Apple also updated its iPad Air tablet, which keeps the same design and price but moves from the company’s proprietary M3 microchip to the newer and more powerful M4 chip.
The 11-inch iPad Air still costs $599 U.S., while the 13-inch version remains at $799 U.S. Apple said in a press release that the new M4 processor is up to 30% faster than previous ones.
The new iPad Air also boasts faster wireless performance and improved cellular connectivity, according to Apple.
The iPad refresh helps Apple maintain the sales momentum its tablets enjoyed over the Christmas holidays, when sales reportedly spiked.
AAPL stock has gained 11% over the last year to trade at $264.72 U.S. per share.
