Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has unveiled a new series of microchips called the “Ryzen 8040” that are aimed at boosting artificial intelligence (A.I.) applications by up to 60%.
The new chips will be incorporated into laptops and personal computers (PCs) made by companies such as Dell (DELL) and HP (HPQ) beginning in the first quarter of 2024.
AMD also announced that its new MI300X accelerator microchip is now available for sale. That chip is used in data centres and servers and is meant to compete with rival Nvidia’s (NVDA) A.I. data centre chips.
The company said that both Meta Platforms (META) and Microsoft (MSFT) have already placed orders to purchase the MI300X chip.
During its most recent earnings call, AMD executives said that they expect data centre microchips to generate about $400 million U.S. in revenue for the fourth quarter and surpass $2 billion U.S. for all of 2024.
AMD’s stock has gained 83% this year and currently trades at $116.82 U.S. per share.
