Why Cenovus Stock Has Been Crushing the Market in 2026

Canadian oil and gas producer Cenovus Energy (TSX:CVE)(NYSE:CVE) has soared more than 90% in 2026, standing out in an uncertain stock market. Higher oil prices and stronger financial results help explain why the stock has attracted attention this year.
Oil prices have reached multi-year highs, with U.S. benchmark crude climbing above US$110 a barrel during 2026, reaching levels last seen in 2022. For Cenovus, higher prices can mean more revenue from each barrel sold, supporting profits and cash flow. That makes the oil-price rally a central part of the stock’s story.
Cenovus also refines oil into fuels such as gasoline and diesel, giving it another source of earnings alongside production.
The company’s second-quarter results were stronger, too. Net earnings reached roughly $2.9 billion, compared with about $850 million a year earlier. Production increased, and Cenovus raised its full-year production forecast without increasing planned capital spending.
Its balance sheet also improved. Net debt fell from about $8.1 billion to $5.4 billion during the quarter, giving the company greater financial flexibility. Cenovus returned $1.4 billion to shareholders through dividends and share buybacks, showing that stronger results translated into tangible shareholder returns. These payouts take two forms: dividends are cash payments to shareholders, while buybacks reduce the number of shares outstanding. Both are ways of returning money to investors, rather than putting all of it back into the business.
Together, higher oil prices, rising production, lower debt, and shareholder payouts help explain the enthusiasm around Cenovus. And with inflation still being a big concern for the economy, the stock may still have even more room to rise higher.
