General Motors Recalls 450,000 Vehicles Over Brake Fluid Issue

General Motors (GM) is recalling 450,000 sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and pick-up trucks because of a faulty brake fluid gauge.

The impacted vehicles have a faulty warning light that may not come on when a loss of brake fluid occurs. GM says the issue is being caused by a software glitch.

There are 38,382 vehicles in Canada impacted by the massive recall.

These vehicles include 2023 Cadillac Escalades, the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500, 2023-2024 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban 1500 models, the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500, and 2023-2024 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles.

GM said that without proper warning lights, the affected vehicles could be driven with low brake fluid, which can negatively impact braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.

General Motors is sending a free software update to vehicle owners and encouraging them to schedule an appointment to have the update performed at a qualified dealership.

Vehicle owners can contact GM customer service at 1-800-462-8782. Chevrolet customers can telephone 1-800-222-1020. And Cadillac customers should call 1-800-458-8006.

The stock of General Motors has gained 36% this year and is currently trading at $48.88 U.S. per share.
