Canada's commodity-linked main stock index ticked higher on Thursday as higher gold prices boosted miners, while investors were cautious over renewed tensions between the U.S. and Iran.
The TSX popped 234.65 points to move into Thursday afternoon at 35,170.45.
The Canadian dollar eased nine cents to 70.57 cents U.S.
In company news, Triple Flag reported preliminary second-quarter revenue of $129.2 million, up from a year earlier. Triple Flag started out Thursday up $1.22, or 3.1%, to $40.46.
Firan Technology Group slightly beat second-quarter revenue estimates, helped by strong demand and aerospace growth. Firan stock ditched 77 cents, or 3.1%, to $24.20.
Meta announced Wednesday it will build a data center in central Alberta, marking the tech giant's first in Canada amid the global AI boom.
Elsewhere, First Majestic Silver added $2.11, or 9.4%, to $24.48, leading gains in the main TSX index, while DPM Metals gained $3.39, or 7.4%, to $49.51, and Endeavour Silver rose 73 cents, or 6.7% to $11.64.
Intact Financial slid $4.19, or 1.4%, to $298.43.
ON BAYSTREET
The TSX Venture Exchange restored 11.05 points, or 1.3%, to 897.73.
Seven of the 12 subgroups changed direction and moved south by noon. Consumer staples backed off 1.2%, while energy lost 0.8%, and telecoms fell 0.7%.
The five gainers were led by materials, stronger 2.6%, gold, brighter 2.5%, and financials, up 0.9%.
ON WALLSTREET
Stocks rose on Thursday, supported by a jump in semiconductors and a fall in oil prices, as equity markets tried to recover despite renewed U.S.-Iran tensions.
The Dow Jones Industrials gained 158.62 points to 52,507.01.
The S&P 500 moved higher 44.1 points to 7,526.81.
The NASDAQ captured 209.22 points to 27,079.87, led by a 6% gain in Micron Technology. Sandisk rose 5%.
Prices for the 10-year Treasury backtracked, raising yields to 4.55% from Wednesday’s 4.57%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions.
Oil prices lost $1.47 to $72.05 U.S. a barrel.
Gold prices brightened $57.50 to $4,139.90 U.S. an ounce.
