British Prime Minister Boris Johnson To Resign

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resigned after several high-profile ministers quit his
government due to ongoing scandals.

Following the resignations of several ministers, including two secretaries of state, and
statements that Johnson is no longer fit to govern, the increasingly isolated prime minister
declared that he is stepping down.

After battling for months to hold onto power, Johnson has been deserted following a series of
scandals that generated headlines around the world.

Britain’s governing Conservative Party will now elect a new leader, a process that could take
months. Johnson said he will remain in office until his successor is chosen.

The government turmoil comes as British citizens face soaring inflation, elevated energy costs,
and the weakest economic growth among major industrialized nations.

Support for Boris Johnson steadily eroded due to multiple scandals, the most recent being
accusations that lawmaker Chris Pincher, who held a government role in pastoral care, groped
men in a private club.

Johnson had to apologize after it emerged that he was briefed that Pincher had been the
subject of previous sexual misconduct complaints before he appointed him.

This followed months of other scandals, including a report into boozy parties at Johnson’s
Downing Street residence and office that broke COVID-19 lockdown rules and saw the prime
minister fined by police over a party for his 56th birthday.

There have also been reports of multiple lawmakers breaking lobbying rules, and criticism that
Johnson has not done enough to lower inflation, with British citizens struggling to cope with
rising energy and food prices.
