Canadian Businesses Struggle To Hire Skilled Talent As Economy Reopens

More than two-thirds (68%) of Canadian businesses are struggling to find skilled talent as the economy reopens, according to a new poll from consulting firm KPMG.

And more than half of businesses polled said that they are concerned they may need to recruit outside of Canada to fill vacant jobs.

The survey findings suggest employees with digital skills are proving hardest to find with nearly 80% of businesses polled saying that the pandemic has changed their business, and they now need more employees with information technology skills.

While the talent pool may be thin, the poll did indicate that several positions will be opening in the near term. Seven out of every 10 business owners polled (70%) said they plan to hire more staff over the next three years. Cyber-security and data analytics came in as the top two skills businesses are looking for when hiring.

KPMG polled 505 small and medium-sized businesses between August 6 and 15 via an online survey.
