Donald Trump says he plans to release a new series of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as he campaigns for the U.S. presidency.
In an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, Trump said he will issue a fourth NFT collection that cryptocurrency enthusiasts can purchase and collect.
Previous NFT collections showed images of Trump in heroic, almost mythical, poses.
In the Bloomberg interview, Trump said about NFTs: “I’m going to do another one, because the people want me to do another one. It’s unbelievable spirit. Beautiful.”
Non-fungible tokens are digital images recorded on a blockchain that is used to certify ownership and authenticity. NFTs are often referred to as “digital art” and people collect them like paintings or trading cards.
News of the NFT collection comes as the crypto sector rallies behind Trump’s campaign and the former president embraces digital assets, promising not to regulate the industry.
In May, Trump’s presidential campaign began accepting cryptocurrency donations.
A report in The Wall Street Journal newspapers says that the Trump camp received $3 million U.S. worth of crypto donations in this year’s second quarter.
Trump’s running mate, Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio, is also pro-crypto and anti-regulation.
During the Bloomberg interview, Trump said of crypto: “It’s not going away. It’s amazing.”
However, Trump’s recent comments are a reversal from the past when he was a vocal critic of digital assets.
But the former president now told Bloomberg Businessweek that: “If we don’t do it, China is going to pick it up and China’s going to have crypto.”
The price of Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, is currently at $64,800 U.S., having risen 47% this year.
