Disney’s Latest Star Wars Film Disappoints At Box Office

Walt Disney’s (DIS) newest Star Wars film has disappointed at the box office.
Movie “The Mandalorian and Grogu” earned an estimated $82 million U.S. at the North American box office during its first three days in theatres.
It is the lowest opening tally for a Star Wars film ever released by Disney.
The movie is based on the Disney+ show “The Mandalorian,” which is the most-watched original show on the streaming platform, with more than 1.3 billion hours consumed globally.
Yet its popularity on the streaming platform has not translated into success at the box office.
However, “The Mandalorian and Grogu” still managed to surpass the $80 million U.S in ticket receipts that box office analysts had forecast for the movie.
This was the first time in seven years that a Star Wars film has been released in theatres.
The new Mandalorian movie tallied less than 2018's “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which earned $84 million U.S. in its opening weekend.
Analysts predict the film will exceed $100 million U.S. domestically for the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend in America.
Internationally, “The Mandalorian and Grogu” earned $63 million U.S. in ticket sales over the weekend.
The Star Wars franchise generates more than $1 billion U.S. each year for the Walt Disney Co. That haul includes merchandise and theme park attractions, as well as movies and TV shows.
DIS stock has declined 42% in the last five years to trade at $103 U.S. per share.
