BlackBerry’s (BB) stock jumped 13% higher on news that the Canadian technology firm has expanded its partnership with U.S. microchip giant Nvidia (NVDA).
In a news release, BlackBerry said that the partnership will allow its developers to build and deploy AI systems for Nvidia’s IGX Thor platform.
IGX Thor is used for things such as autonomous, humanoid and surgical robotics, medical imaging, and industrial automation.
The expanded partnership should help BlackBerry’s connected devices and Internet of Things (IoT) business operations.
BlackBerry is still best known as a smartphone maker. But over the past 15 years, it has transitioned to providing software for self-driving vehicles, medical devices and communications.
Nvidia remains one of the world’s most high-profile technology companies, largely because its microchips and processors power artificial intelligence (A.I.) data centres and computers.
BB stock has gained 78% over the last 12 months to trade at $5.50 U.S. per share.
