TSX Futures Dip Thursday

Futures tracking Canada's main stock index slid on Thursday, as investors assessed quarterly bank earnings from Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Royal Bank of Canada, alongside the ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.

The TSX swooned 143.98 points to end Wednesday’s session at 36,813.65

The Canadian dollar ducked back 0.04 cents to 72.03 cents U.S.

On the geopolitical front, Qatar's prime minister will visit Tehran on Thursday to pursue mediation efforts after the U.S. and Iran traded recriminations over Washington's promise to increase economic pressure on Iran by targeting its trade partners for sanctions.

On the economic front, Statistics Canada reported the number of employees receiving pay and benefits from their employer—measured as "payroll employment" in the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours—was little changed (+4,800; +0.0%) in June, following an increase of 45,000 (+0.2%) in May. On a year-on-year basis, payroll employment was up by 155,000 (+0.8%) in June.

The TSX Venture Exchange tanked 8.16 points Wednesday to 1,002.77.

ON WALLSTREET

NASDAQ futures were higher Thursday as the latest earnings reports from Nvidia and other well-known technology companies boosted sentiment.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials gave back 34 points, or 0.1%, to 53,483.

Futures for the S&P 500 surged 38.75 points, or 0.5%, to 7,728.75.

Futures for the NASDAQ Composite raced 339 points, or 1.2%, to 29,628.50.

Nvidia shares jumped 7% in premarket trading on Thursday, after it beat analyst expectations and forecast strong revenue growth. The chipmaker’s fiscal second-quarter revenue more than doubled and surpassed forecasts by its largest amount in two years.

More broadly, shares linked to the semiconductor sector rallied in pre-market trading, with Marvell Technology adding more than 5% while Micron and Arm up more than 4%.

Salesforce rallied 12% in pre-market trading after revenue came in ahead of Wall Street’s forecast for the second quarter.

Okta soared more than 19% ahead of Thursday’s regular session after surpassing analyst expectations and reporting booming demand due to agentic AI.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index dipped 0.2% Thursday, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng hesitated 0.3%.

Oil prices nudged ahead three cents to $82.26 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices waned $9.20 to $4,644.10 U.S an ounce.
